The College of Occupational Therapy/NISH, established in 2020, aims to empower and train occupational therapy students with knowledge and skills for performing appropriate and independent Occupational therapy assessments, required for the analysis of a client’s occupational performance limitations and plan appropriate interventions.

Furthermore, College of Occupational Therapy aims to provide basics of research skills together and critically analyse the research findings to provide clinical services that are evidence-based. The academic services are empowered to provide reflective practice to students which will enable them to progress into postgraduate / doctorate level in Occupational Therapy. 

Objectives of Course

  1. Develop Professional Identity: Understand the role of OT in varied settings, and enabling occupation across the varied diagnoses and across age groups

  2. Develop Clinical Competency: in the aspects of patient care, use of appropriate evidence-based assessments, planning interventions using evidence-based practice and reflexive practice, prioritizing safety, time management and decision-making and critically validating the methods of practice by undertaking research

  3. Demonstrate Professionalism: committed to ethical practice and high personal standards of behaviour

  4. Demonstrate Professional Competency: Improve on effective communicator (engaging in effective dialogue and written documentation) and collaborator (working in teams)

Learning Outcomes of the BOT Course

Upon completion of the Occupational Therapy program, students will be able to demonstrate the following outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate and understand factors: anatomy, physiology, neuro-muscular mechanism, psychological, environmental, and mechanical factors that enable human movement to accomplish activities of daily living, work, play and leisure.

  2. Demonstrate and understand the use of arts and craft, as a therapeutic media.

  3. Demonstrate a wide knowledge base and ability to apply occupational theory to the practice setting.

  4. Identify physical, psychological, environmental and cultural factors that are facilitators or barriers for independence in participation in various occupations.

  5. Demonstrate wide clinical skills for assessing and planning interventions for clients with varied performance and participation problems resulting from developmental disabilities, neurological, orthopaedic or mental health dysfunctions across age groups.

  6. Develop occupation-centred and client-centred intervention plans for clients in varied practice settings: physical rehabilitation, mental health and paediatrics.

  7. Use problem-solving and critical reasoning skills to plan and deliver evidence-based management programs.

  8. Monitor, review and reflect on the response of the clients to interventions.

  9. Identify areas for continued professional development.

  10. Demonstrate written and verbal communication to inform and promote professional practices.

Eligibility

Candidates belonging to all categories for admission to the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy course should have passed in all the subjects of the qualifying examinations of the Higher Secondary(H.Sc) conducted by Kerala state or equivalent examination (Academic Stream) with the following subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Selection criteria

The selection and admission to the course will be done through LBS only. From the rank list prepared by LBS, 10 candidates will be selected on Merit and another 9 through management Quota and 1 through NRI quota.

Reservations

Reservation for SC/ST/OBC, PwD and others as per the norms of the Government.

A successful candidate has job opportunities as therapist, teaching faculty, researcher in Government & NGOs, self-employment, consultant/advisor in industrial & educational institutions in India & abroad.

BSC smallNISH is the first Institution in the country to propose new degree programme exclusively for students with hearing impairment. NISH started the three year B.Sc. (Computer Science) (HI) exclusively for students with hearing impairment during 2008-09. The scheme and syllabus have been so designed that there is substantial practical content and less theory. The programme is affiliated to the University of Kerala. The program is innovative and is expected to fulfil the long felt dreams of students with hearing impairment for higher education. The regulations, scheme and syllabus for the programmes has been revised in 2013. From 2013 onwards the duration of the programme is 4 years having 8 semesters. The first year is Preparatory year and will focus exclusively in Basic Mathematics and Communicative English. A student admitted to a programme is required to pass all the subjects in Preparatory year to be eligible to continue into the second year of the degree program. The University of Kerala would award degree to successful candidates.

 

The programme is the first of its kind in the country and will provide :

 ADMISSION
  1. Admission is restricted to those who are hearing impaired, as defined in "The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995". Hearing Impairment means loss of 60 dB or more in the better ear in the conversational range of frequencies.
  2. Candidates seeking admission to the degree programme should have passed the Plus Two / Pre degree or its equivalent from any Board or University in India, recognized as equivalent for admission to a degree programme in the University of Kerala or equivalent of 10+2 education in India or abroad
  3. Admission is made on the basis of the marks obtained in the Degree Admission Competency Examination(DACE)  conducted by the institute.
  4. The total number of seats for the above programme is 30.

  1. Tuition Fee Rs 6,000/- per semester
  2. Caution deposit Rs.2,000/- (payable at the time of admission. Refundable on completion of programme)
