Child development is one of the most interesting phenomenon that unravels the beauty of mankind. Children uses various social, cognitive, motor and linguistic means to excel in this world. When this mastery is delayed or disrupted there arise a matter of concern in the minds of parents and professional. This Applied Learning Series in Neurodevelopmental Disorders brings you a detailed account on various topics that are emerging in the child development studies. Learning it from legends make it worth as it roots from experience.

We welcome you all to another learning series "Learning from legend- conversation with Dr. Carol Westby and Ms. Deborah Wilson" on 15th October 2016 at NISH Campus

 

The course objectives are:

Understand the development and interrelationships of cognition, play, language, social/emotional skills, and literacy.

Understanding child’s play/language skills across disability

Engage children in discourse that promotes academic language skills 

Use play to promote the cognitive, language, and social-emotional skills and literacy comprehension.

Resource person

Dr. Carol Westby is a consultant for Bilingual Multicultural Services in Albuquerque, NM and an affiliated professor at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. She is a fellow of the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), holds Specialty Recognition in Child Language, and has received the Honors of the ASHA and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Geneva College and the University of Iowa. She has published and presented nationally and internationally on theory of mind, language-literacy relationships, narrative/expository development and facilitation, assessment and facilitation of written language, and issues in assessment and intervention with culturally/linguistically diverse populations. She has been principal investigator on a number of clinical service, research, and personnel preparation grants, including Project BRIDGE (Building Reading in Diverse Groups in Education), that prepared graduate students in speech-language pathology to work within classrooms to facilitate language-literacy development of children from Hispanic and Native American backgrounds and Project PLAY (Play and Language Attunement in Young Children) that trained caregivers to increase the quality and frequency of interactions that promote development of theory of mind and language. She has PhD in Speech Pathology from the University of Iowa.

Deborah J. Wilson is a consultant for Bilingual Multicultural Services to students who are Deaf and Hard-of-hearing in the Santa Fe Public Schools.  She is a fellow of the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and worked as Speech Language Therapist Albuquerque Public Schools, Educational Leadership Consultant, LLC. And also served as Administrator/Principal, New Mexico School for the Deaf (NMSD), Albuquerque. Served as Early Interventionist; Co-Coordinator Project Jericho Alta Mira Specialized Family Services, Albuquerque, New Mexico.Co-authored a Chapter with Dr. Carol Westby, “Literacy and Theory of Mind in Deaf and Hard-of-hearing Students​

The Diploma in Indian Sign Language Interpreting (DISLI) is a diploma course introduced by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) from 2002. NISH has been approved as a recognised centre for the conduct of the course by RCI. The main aim of the course is to generate qualified and professional interpreters . The successful candidates from the diploma course will be eligible to be appointed as interpreters. RCI will provide the certificate of registration.
