Academic libraries play a pivotal role in the higher education arena. Classroom-oriented teaching takes a qualitative transformation to knowledge-oriented learning. Libraries have undergone a paradigm shift in the new century, with the use of digital and internet resources, to become the backbone of the information source. Libraries act as the main facilitators of learning and source for knowledge dissemination.
The NISH library is progressing, as per the plans for development, into an information hub. Currently, the library holds a varied collection of books, national and international journals, online journals, standards, newspapers, periodicals, magazines, and electronic media such as CDs and DVDs. The library holds around 3000 national & international books covering every field of interest relevant to the curriculum, scheme & syllabus. Resources are mainly related to audiology, speech, language, voice, communication disorders, autism, education, psychology, disabilities and rehabilitation, fine-arts, computer science, and commerce.
Library functions are automated with comprehensive library management software. Besides its traditional formats of delivery, the library has the following provisions and services:
Digital Library: The NISH Library has been acquiring and disseminating up-to-date information from trusted national and international scholarly bodies for its patrons. Twenty-six international e-journal titles covering relevant topics of academic and research interest are included in its collection. NISH has been subscribing to 6000+ e-journals and 97000+ ebooks through NLIST initiative under the UGC- INFLIBNET consortium.
Academic writing platform: The library has acquired and is managing a cloud-based online writing platform called ‘APA StyleCentral’ for facilitating academic writing needs complying with the Academic writing standard- APA Style.
Digital repository: An open source digital library cum repository ‘DSpace’ has been instituted. It comprises of the institution’s academic outputs like projects, theses, dissertations etc. This makes easy retrieval of resources for digital reference.
Plagiarism checking software: The library has implemented an industry standard plagiarism checking software ‘Turnitin’ in order to eliminate the potential threat of misappropriation academic writing.
Web Online Public Access Catalogue (Web OPAC): Library resource status can be searched at: webopac.nish.ac.in
Access to the above services has been set up across the institutional LAN. Remote access has been set up for securely accessing information sources remotely.
