Physiotherapy
In NISH, the department of physiotherapy started in the year 2013. Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that is primarily concerned with the promotion of mobility, functional ability, quality of life and movement potential through examination, evaluation, diagnosis and physical intervention.
Conditions that benefit from Physiotherapy include:
Global Developmental Delay
Cerebral Palsy
Chromosomal Anomalies
Seizure Disorder
Spina Bifida
Neuromotor Disorders.
Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Physiotherapy Intervention focuses on the following areas:
Facilitation of developmental milestones
Strength and endurance
Gait training
Postural correction
Balance and coordination skills
Joint mobility
Gross motor and fine motor skills
Oromotor skills
Respiratory functions
Occupational Therapy
At NISH, the department of occupational therapy started functioning in 2015. Occupational therapy services are delivered as a part of the rehabilitation programme which provide services for individuals from infancy to elderly population.
Conditions that benefit from occupational therapy include:
Autism Spectrum Disorders
Neurodevelopmental Disorders.
Global Developmental Delay
Sensory Integration Dysfunction/Sensory Processing Disorder
Feeding Aversion/Oral Motor Difficulties
Chromosomal Anomalies
Learning Disabilities
Neuromotor Disorders.
Occupational therapy Intervention focuses on developing specific life skills. Through specific exercises and task-related activities, occupational therapists help the child learn or regain the challenging skills. When skill and strength cannot be developed or improved, the therapist works with the child and family in developing creative alternatives to achieve goals in the following areas:
Activities of daily living
Sensory integration
Feeding skills
Handwriting skills
Motor planning and praxis
Body awareness
Bilateral Integration skills and midline crossing skills
Balance and coordination skills
Visual motor and visual perceptual skills
Facilitation of developmental milestones
Age-appropriate fine motor skills.
Occupational therapy/ Physiotherapy services include:
A detailed evaluation carried out using standardised and non-standardised tools and clinical observations to determine a baseline of the client’s functional performance.
Interventions tailored specifically to the individual, which incorporate therapy programmes, recommendations and strategies. Parental training is also provided.
An outcome based re-evaluation carried out in regular intervals.
Highlights
Interdisciplinary Working
Positive outcomes for children and families
Increased parenting capacity
High parent satisfaction and engagement
Positive outcomes for staff
Paediatric Gymnasium
A fully equipped structured environment, particularly for children with special needs, which helps child development in their gross and fine motor skills. It also provides a wonderful opportunity for children to improve their muscle strength, balance and coordination.
Sensory Integration Room
A well designed multi-sensory room enables the children to explore a variety of sensory experiences, providing new ways of encouraging learning, motor development, cognitive development, language and social interaction skills. It can open up a whole new world for children with sensory processing difficulties, cognitive and physical impairments
Virtual Reality
The person interacts with a multidimensional, multisensory computer generated virtual environment, which can be explored in real time. The technology enables the person to work on therapeutic exercises to improve function. It also offers the capacity to individualize treatment needs while providing increased standardization of assessment and training protocols.
Intervention Programmes
Intervention includes interprofessional collaboration between physiotherapist and occupational therapist. The following units provide interventions based on severity, age and need.
Individual Training Program
An individualized intervention program is established based on the initial evaluation and aimed at achieving specific goals of each client
The therapist designs a customized treatment plan, provides training and assistance to parents, and monitors and modifies activities based on the progress.. Outcomes are largely dependent on a client’s adherence to a specific exercise and home training. The sessions are carried out on weekly and monthly bases.
Sensory Motor Unit
Sensory motor intervention is a personalised activity plan that helps children access the specific sensory inputs incorporated with motor activities they need throughout the day.
Therapist adopts various methods to assist the child in generalizing the effects into play, activities of daily living, and school tasks
Sensory Integration Unit
Sensory integration therapy aims to help children with sensory integration disorder, by exposing them to various sensory stimulations in a structured, repetitive way. The occupational therapist gradually makes activities more challenging and complex and prepares daily activities in a sensory diet which suits the child’s exact needs and schedule. It usually takes place in a setting outfitted with specialized equipment called a sensory gym.
Cerebral Palsy unit
Cerebral Palsy Unit follows an integrative approach in assessment and intervention of children with cerebral palsy and ensure long-term results. Physiotherapists and occupational therapists focus on encouraging a person’s day-to-day movement skills such as sitting, walking, playing, dressing and toileting. The unit helps to prevent impairments that might affect movement with a range of specialist interventions such as movement training, neurodevelopmental treatment and PNF techniques. The duration of a rehabilitation training is about four to six months. One parent is allowed with the child for the entire duration of the rehabilitation program and is instrumental in assuring continuity of treatment at home.
SCORE ( Sensory, Cognitive and Rehabilitation Unit)
Sensory, Cognitive and Rehabilitation Unit adapts an interdisciplinary group therapy approach, combining the expertise of the physiotherapist, the occupational therapist and the psychologist. The rehabilitation team together with the children and parents undertakes assessment, diagnosis, intervention, goal-setting and the creation of a therapy plan. The children and their family are involved in discussions about their condition, prognosis and care plan. The unit functions on a weekly basis for children with sensory, cognitive and motor difficulties.
Adult Rehab Unit
A multidisciplinary team comprising of professionals from a range of disciplines (physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech language pathologist and psychologist) work together to deliver comprehensive care that addresses as many of the patient's needs as possible.
The team combine their skill sets to tackle complex and challenging outcomes of the neurological impairment. The multidisciplinary team meet regularly to discuss their work with individuals so that each patient has a care plan best suited to their individual needs.
Oral Sensory and Motor Unit
Oral Sensory and Motor Unit offers a comprehensive interdisciplinary service to children with feeding and speech difficulties. The team approach provides an extensive service with in-depth assessments, interventions and recommendations. The team comprises of:
Speech language pathologist (Supports the development of speech, language and communication skills in children.)
Occupational Therapist (Assess the child's feeding skills, motor skills, sensory skills, strength, as well as the behaviour and environmental factors surrounding mealtime. Following this, the occupational designs a plan to ensure that the child is reaching their full potential with self-feeding, independence and safety.)
Physiotherapist (Works on postural management, proper respiration, muscle strengthening and joint mobility.)
Workshops and Awareness Programs
The departments of occupational therapy and physiotherapy conduct workshops and awareness programs in regular intervals for parents as well as professionals.
